Very Rare Silver Inlaid Horn/shell Pair Cased verge pocket watch circa 1700
Extremely rare and beautiful silver inlaid horn/shell pair cased pocket watch from the golden era of English watch making at its best! This lovely watch Comes with a Georgian steel chain, fob seal(bust of a womens head), miniature horn folding knife and crank key all dating from around 1750 or a little earlier. Also a fitted wooden box with silver Haberdashers crest badge and brass plaque. The other key i brought at a fair and it goes quite well with the watch, it fits and winds the watch perfectly as does the crank key! Just the watch, not the box and chain etc! MOVEMENT: Gilt verge movement with a large and beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock showing foliage above a mask. The wide D shape foot is typical of the period, silver regulator disk with four early square baluster pillars. In good condition and running well. DIAL: Fine Silver champleve dial, signed same as the movement. Good condition throughout with just a tiny bit of wear to the gilt rim at the catch at 6. Good early 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE: A plain silver case with rubbed makers mark IB below a coronet, all in good condition, Crystal is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly, the case maker is probably John Banbury as his mark was an incuse IB below a coronet! OUTER CASE: A brass base with silver rims and a horn/shell covering. The horn/shell is inlaid in silver with birds, tulips, foliage and pin work. The horn/shell is in near mint condition, wonderful colour/patina, no chips, pins or pieces missing and no restoration. Just a few tiny slithers of silver wire missing from the foliage, could be replaced by a jeweller if required? But I have left as is, as this is the history of the watch and these slithers of silver are tiny! The hinge catch and catch button are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly! Georgian silk sampler with embroidery pattern and Lords Prayer, to small to read even with a loupe. Such a rare and beautiful watch, only ever see this type of inlaid horn/shell outer case in museums or books, this watch is unusually small, just 50mm across (not including bow) A similar watch can been seen in a book called THE ENGLISH WATCH by Terrance Camerer Cuss in photo 12. Sensible offers considered and any questions answered as best I can!
