HMV Portable Gramophone Model 101 in VERY, VERY RARE GREY Leathercloth Case
HMV Portable Gramophone Model 101 in VERY, VERY RARE GREY. This is a vintage HMV 101 portable gramophone, Serial No. 119638, built in early 1929. This is a de-luxe variant in a grey leathercloth covered case, with a matching motor board, which makes it very , very collectable. HMV 101 portable Gramophones were normally black. Coloured portables are rare. Coloured HMV Portable Gramophones are, therefore, sought after by Collectors. This grey covering is however, very, very rare and, although called’grey’ has a beige/brown like colour, and I have only seen a couple for sale in recent years. According to the book “His Master’s Gramophone”, page 200, the de-luxe grey 101 had the lowest sales of all the de-luxe 101 models up to Feb 1931, and so is much rarer than even the red, blue, green, and crocodile 101 models. Total sales of the Black leathercloth version totalled 168,873 by February 1931, whereas total sales of the Grey leathercloth version totalled just 790 by February 1931. The grey leathercloth covered case is in immaculate condition for its age as it has been re-dyed and polished to match the original colour and has just a couple of age related cosmetic marks and a couple of small impressions/dents on the cover (see photos). The original grey handle is also in very good condition. Internally the gramophone is in an unusually good original condition. There are bright chromed parts including the tonearm, speed adjuster and manual brake, all in excellent condition, and the winding handle clips with minimal pitting. The chrome plated turntable is also in very good condition, with no pitting of the plated surfaces, and with its grey felt in very good condition though a little faded/worn in places. Fitted with the original chromed HMV No. 4 Soundbox which has a good mica diaphragm and gives excellent sound. The original HMV Model 59 motor has been stripped, cleaned and lubricated, and so operates smoothly and quietly. On the right at the front of the motor board is a recessed sliding needle container with the chrome plating in very good condition with minimal pitting. Inside the case lid, there is the original & colourful HMV-Logo transfer, still beautifully bright clear and colourful. It has variable speed, the main speed being 78. The speed adjuster also works correctly. (See operating instructions booklet for how to use the Strobe Disc). The original winding handle is in very good condition with its gleaming chrome plating, and it clips neatly onto the deck. The spring motor is fully wound after about 40 turns and will easily play a 10 inch 78 rpm record. The original lid clasp/lock was badly rusted and broken and has been replaced. A fantastic opportunity for a Collector to add a gramophone that is very rarely seen nowadays to their collection, especially one which has obviously been well looked after and serviced during its lifetime, or for sometime seeking an investment for the future and which can be enjoyed in the meantime. Please view photos to judge the condition, as the photos form part of the description. Also Provided to get you going as soon as you receive the gramophone. A 78 rpm 10 inch Shellac record = see the YouTube video below (see operating instruction manual on how to correctly play records). 50’soft’ tone needles (see operating instructions manual provided with the gramophone on the different types of needle). A copy of a real HMV 101 Operating Instructions booklet. A guide on’How to Operate Gramophones. A’Strobe’ Disc. The case is 42 cm long, 29 cm wide and 14 cm tall. It weighs 7.3 Kg. This gramophone for sale is playing a 1935 78 RPM 10 Shellac Brunswick Record No. 02054’Silent Night, Holy Night” sung by Bing Crosby. This record will be supplied FREE with the gramophone. The record is in VERY GOOD PLUS condition and the sleeve is in VERY GOOD condition. Please view photos to help judge the condition, as the photos form part of the description. THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS WILL BE SEPARATELY WRAPPED AND PROTECTED. THE GRAMOPHONE ITSELF WILL BE WRAPPED IN BUBBLE WRAP AND SUSPENDED SAFELY IN POLYSTYRENE BEADS INSIDE AN OVERSIZE DOUBLE-THICKNESS CARDBOARD CONTAINER.
